The Game-Art-HQ Pokémon Art Collaboration: Generation II
Happy Christmas everyone! After our first Pokémon Art Collaboration that tributed the 20th Anniversary of the Pokémon Franchise we got a lot of positive feedback and quickly decided that it could be a fun idea to create a whole series of Pokémon art collaborations on Game-Art-HQ and do one Generation now per year 🙂
The theme of the Pokémon performing one of their moves or abilities without any backgrounds stayed the same, and while we have “only” 200 illustrations this year since the Generation II Pokémon games introduced exactly hundred new Pokémon the number of different artists on board jumped to over 220 now! But enough of the talking, please enjoy the artworks made by the dedicated Pokémon fans in the Game-Art-HQ Community and learn a bit about the games, the Pokémon and their moves now, You gotta view them all!
We sorted the Johto Region Pokémon after the official National Pokédex:

The Pokémon Generation II Games Gold and Silver were released in 1999, a time when almost everything else in gaming was about pushing the best graphics out of the older game consoles like the Sony Playstation and the Nintendo 64 while Sega just released their Dreamcast. The Handheld market was still completely dominated by Nintendo and the first Generation of Pokémon was a giant success! So it was no surprise that Nintendo & Game Freak continued to release Generation II on the new Game Boy Color systems instead of switching to the Nintendo 64. This time, we would explore the Region of Johto and meet not less than hundred new Pokémon but could also find and use all 151 Pokémon from the Kanto Region as well. Being able to find Pokémon from the older games became a very appreciated part of the series.

“Pokemon was a huge deal back in late 90’s and everyone were playing gen I, but I was given a cheap GS bootleg instead. Whelp, at least I got to see all these elusive Gen II pokes before the others! Anyway, the bootleg turned out to be my fav game and I re-played it countless times (while not understanding a word from this Hong Kong Translation). Years later, after many more pokemon games and generations, I still think that gen II was the best and the most influencing thing that happened to the franchise. Oh, and my favourite pokemon? It’s Lugia!” by Karolina Twardosz aka Twarda8 from Poland, she drew Murkrow and Skarmony for our Gen II Tribute

“Pokemon, for me, mixed successfully two things I always loved: strategy and a person-pet bond. Generation II was the first one I could play on the Gameboy; most of my cherished memories are from there; Having trouble with Whitney, the Rival theme…visiting Kanto for the first time and fighting Red. It took me 3 playthroughs to have a favorite, and the Pokemon I ended loving the most is Umbreon.” by DrJhordan from Brazil who drew not less than ten of the Pokemon for our Gen I & II Tributes |

Johto has to be my favourite generation. As much as I love all the gens to this day, Johto was the one that helped me through some tough years in school. It introduced a bunch of amazing looking critters and I’ll never forget all the fun I had drawing my favourites; Togetic, Sneasel, Typhlosion, Umbreon, Kingdra, Houndoom, Skarmory, Tyranitar, the list goes on and on… 20 years later and I’m still drawing ’em! Altarior from Denmark drew the most of her mentioned Pokemon for this Tribute, overall she participated with 14! illustrations in our Gen I & II Art Collaboration already! |

Thanks a ton at everyone who contributed his time and talents to this project to make it a real gift by and for the Pokemon Fan Community out there!
Thats it for 2017, which was a great year for us gamers in general, no matter if we are Pokémon fans, stick to first person shooters, fighting games, Multiplayer focussed experiences like Overwatch or enjoyed fantastic looking indies like Cuphead. Here on Game-Art-HQ our main focus was on tributing the 30th Anniversary of the Street Fighter Series, continuing Link’s Blacklist and creating the second part of our Pokemon Art Collaboration Our second Pokemon Tribute was started in March already, the last of the 200 illustrations was submitted in the first September week. We were working for around three months on this and the 100 Pokémon galleries and look forward to continue this big Project in 2018.
