The Beat’em Up Genre Tribute: Muramasa: The Demon Blade (2009)
Muramasa: The Demon Blade is one of the few 2D games and beat’em ups released for the Nintendo Wii, and was made by Vanillaware, the Japanese developer company which made Odin Sphere before and just released Dragon’s Crown another beat’em up. This game is for only one player which is relative unusual for a beat’em up, but it fits to the game because of its strong story about the Demon Blades which are summoning creatures from the netherworld to Japan during the Genroku era and the two main protagonists Momohime and Kisuke. The game is completely 2D and features some of the most beautiful handdrawn animations and sprites ever in 2D games so far, like Bariarti, the artists behind our illustration of Muramasa mentioned, “This Game is Art!” Gameplay wise this is a mix of a beat’em up with platform elements sometimes too and a tiny bit of oldschool Castlevania feel as well. There are different weapons (108) and basically two different weapon types (Blade and Long Blade). Back in 2009 this game got a lot great reviews and players worldwide praised its great graphics and fun gameplay. Muramasa: The Demon Blade was ported with a few additional featured to the Playstation Vita in 2013, in North America it was just released in June.
