The Game Art HQ Playstation Anniversary Tribute: SaGa Frontier 2
SaGa Frontier II released in April 1999 by Squaresoft is not a direct sequel to the first SaGa game and tells a very different story, this time the player can choose between two characters Gustave XIII of Finney and Will Knight. The game has a very beautiful art style which was pretty unique at its time, especially on the Playstation where the most games were completely in 3D or used pre-rendered backgrounds like in Resident Evil or the Final Fantasy games on the system. All the backgrounds are hand drawn and have a water-color style as you can see in the screenshots above. SaGa Frontier 2 is together with Legend of Mana one of the most beautiful 2D Playstation games. The SaGa series continues till today, SaGa Frontier 2 was only ported to PSN in Japan though and seems to be one of the quite overlooked RPG’s on the platform. This game was one of the first claimed ones when we started to organize the PSX Anniversary Art Collaboration, if you like JRPG’s with a unique art style and gameplay which tells a story different from Final Fantasy or Persona, grab this gem via Amazon etc.

SaGa Frontier 2: Mutters Krankenbett by Angelus-Tenebrae
“I liked the game for the nice watercolor backgrounds and the soundtrack. The characters were interesting, and it was interesting to follow the storyline of the main character, who is handicapped by not being able to use magic spells like everyone else in the game can. There was a great diversity of games on the Playstation, so it was a good platform with many genres and classic RPGs. And Squaresoft apparently made a great bulk of their best games on that platform as well.” |
