Arcana Hearts
Arcana Hearts a 2d fighting game, with girls only, the game over screen in this game just shows the font after the countdown for continuing the game run out..typical for most fighting games
This screenshot is from the PS2 version which is a nearly identical port of the arcade version of Arcana Hearts

Battle Arena Toshinden (PSX)
BA Toshinden was one of the first 3d fighting games. Never a arcade game but developed like one with an arcade mode, 2p, practise and options.
The Game Over screen was also done like in the most arcade fighters, meaning the camera zooms in or out and the Game Over font appears.
Pretty in Pink this time
Battle Shark (Arcade)
Battle Shark is a 2d shoot em up under the sea, developed by Taito and created for the arcades in 1989
A pretty good and unique game among all the shooters.
The Game Over screen shows one or the main endboss of the game but i am not sure since i didnt play it trough.
Bubble Bobble (Arcade)
Once the Bubble Bobble and Puzzle Bobble series were relative popular, today they are nearly forgotten…ohh nostalgia.
The game, made by Taito for arcades in 1986 and later ported to a ton of platforms is definitive a cult classic together with its unforgettable music.
The game over screen is well…minimalisic.
Burnout 3: Takedown
Not a real Game-Over screen this time, just a screen of one of those deadly looking crashes which made the Burnout series so popular (beside many other great features).
This would be a Game Over for sure if it was real.
Bust A Move 2: Arcade Edition
You see that cute Game Over screen in Bust a Move 2 aka Puzzle Bobble 2 for Arcade, Playstation and Saturn, a small animation is included as well
Crash Bandicoot (PSX)
1996, the Birth of Crash Bandicoot, one of the most successful Playstation (1) game series and a pretty good 3d platformer series in general
Just everything in the game was done in polygons so it was no wonder the Game Over Logo pops up in 3d as well while Dr Neo Cortex runs after Crash trough the screen
Diablo II
I guess just everyone who ever played Diablo II saw this “You have Died” message quite often. Its nothing special, press ESC and you are in the town again.
Dino Stalker
Dino Stalker is a light gun shooter nad more a sequel of the Resident Evil Survior games than a new Dino Crisis.
The red Game Over font looks very traditional, a red line is moving from left to right below it
Dynasty Warriors 2
Dynasty Warriors 2 was the first free roaming part of the popular series and released in 2000 for the Playstation 2.
The game is all about wars and battles of whole armies (while the player controls only one character in a battle) and this game over screen shows the sad return to home of a losing army…
Dynasty Warriors 3
In Dynasty Warriors 3, just everyone of the over forty characters got his or her own Game Over screen, wouldnt the Game Over font be there you would think it looks like a wallpaper
Dynasty Warriors 4
Compared with the Dynasty Warrior 3 Game Over screens a small step backwards, you see just a lot of weapons in the back of the Game Over font
Final Fantasy XII
The most Final Fantasy games didnt have Game Over screens but just short messages in the battlescreen.
Final Fantasy XII is the exception with a nice Game Over font and a deep red turning screen
Guilty Gear (PSX)
Guilty Gear is the first part of the 2d fighting game series and was released for Arcades and the Playstation.
Its Game Over screen is something typical, after the question to continue for 10 seconds the Game Over Font appears, only half of the screen is viewable and turns deep red like blood
Guilty Gear X (PS2)
Guilty Gear saw a complete graphical upgrade with Guilty Gear X and its many updates, it also set quite a level regarding the style in fighting games.
The Game Over in GGX looks like the snow effect on tv when no channel is found, after the Game Over a “See you again” appears followed by an effect which looks like a turned off TV
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core+
Now thats what i call a stylish game over screen.
The GG games are all about heavy metal and so its no wonder even the Game Over screen looks like something you see on Metal related fan t-shirts
Kengo: Master of Bushido (PS2)
Kengo was one of the first games for the Playstation 2 and it was a surprise it was released outside japen since its all about Samurai and the Way of Bushido. Its sequels were japan exclusive.
There is no real Game Over in Kengo, if you lose a battle only that “FAILURE” font appears above your fallen character and the player can try again.

King of Fighters`98 Ultimate Re-Match
Nothing spectacular about the Game Over screen of the KOF `98 remake
King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match
KOF 2k2 UM was the last King of Fighters released for the Playstation 2 and was only released in Japan.
A stylish game over screen with the typical KOF “Thank you for playing” ending
King of Fighter`s 2003
Game Over! …but thank you for playing
Still wonder why the A and the 2 are in red.
King of Fighters XI
So clean and simple, but still somewhat stylish, i like that all KOF Games seem to have very different Game Over Screens but always fitting to the games
King`s Field IV
The first part of the KF series for the Playstation 2. In western regions that series was never very sucessful, its very hard compared to most other games and relative slow as well.
The Game Over screen is also a continue screen but it shows a nice gravestone in the back…
Legend of Mana (PSX)
LoM is considered to be one of the most beautiful 2d games during the 32bit generation.
I expected a nicely drawn Game Over screen but well…Continue or got to the title screen is all after you died and well..a silent reaction by your protagonist.
Marvel vs Capcom 2
One of the most popular 2d fighters for a long time. MVC2 combined the 2d sprites with 3d elements in the Stages and menus.
The game over screen is no difference. While the letters themself are 2d, the background is a “Try It Again” 3d animation
Mystic Heroes (PS2)
Mystic Heroes is a 2002 game by Koei reeeelative similar to the Dynasty Warriors games but with a different battle mechanic.
The game over screen looks like being from a fighting game with the camerca being above the dead character
NARC
NARC is a 3d sandbox game more or less for the PS2,XBOX and PC. You control one of two cops and you can run around in a city, buy and sell drugs, and do all kinds of things there.
If you lose all your life you dont get a real Game Over screen, instead the camera spins around the falling character and the “Mission Failed” appears, you have basically unlimited lifes in the game
Ninja Kids, The (Arcade)
This mix of a beat em up and a shoot em up was made by Taito in 1990 for the arcades. It doesnt have a real Game Over screen but at least that Game Over words in a relative interesting font
Plotting (Arcade)
A puzzle game, relative different from Tetris. Made in 1989 by Taito for the arcades.
The weird main protagonist which looks like some blog starts crying at the game over screen

Its a quite cute game and i felt entertained by it for a good while.
At the game over screen you see the animals taking care of the hurt one which felt to earth….awwwwww.
Punisher (PS2)
You`re Dead.
Even Frank Castle can die in the Punisher game for PS2, XBOX and PC and if it happens you see him falling down and than this small game over screen telling you the bitter truth.
Samurai Warriors
Just like in Dynasty Warriors 3, every playable character gets his own Game Over screen in Samurai Warriors
Samurai Warriors 2
I guess this is a good example to see how that part of gamedesign changed trough the time. Today we see less and less Game Over screens actually, instead the game goes right to the continue option or starts at the mission select or start of an level
Sengoku Basara 2
Never learned japanese beside a few words, but i am pretty sure the big kanjis on the screen mean nothing else than GAME OVER. So..byebye Keiji!
Sad this game was never released outside Japan, its in my opinion levels better than Sengoku Basara 3:Samurai Heroes
SoulCalibur III
At least till part 3 of the SoulCalibur Saga the series was known for their many unlockable artworks and the rich story.
There are actually 2 game over screens in SCIII one with the Calibur and one with the Soul Edge, i think its depending on the character which one you see.
For the one to the left i used Mitsurugi
Strikers 1945
One of those oldschool 2d arcade shooters ny Psikyo, released in 1996.
It let`s you know you are game over already while you still have the chance to continue, and beside that, it is just the standard thing
Strikers 1945 II
The sequel which was released in 1997. As you see the Game Over is just the same as a year before, looks like its just copied too ^^
Tekken (PSX)
I guess i dont have to describe Tekken for anyone.
Like the most fighters ported from the arcades it doesnt have a real Game Over screen, just a colorful font which appears above your character lying on the ground and the camera zoomed directly above it
After the Game Over, the highscores appear
Wacky Races starring Dick Dastardly and Muttley (ps2)
Wacky Races is a kart similar racer about the old tc cartoons. The graphic is cell shaded the game was released for the dreamcast and later ported to the playstation 1 and 2
Since its a racing game and not made for arcades in the first place you dont see a real game over screen in it, but a often quite funny sequence showing the sad or angry racers if they didnt made it to the pole position
Warriors Orochi (PS2)
Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and a few new characters were combined in this game. It has no real Game Over screen.
At least you get the Information that you are facing the ultimate Defeat at least
X-Men Legends
X-Men Legends was the first one of the sucessful hack n slash Marvel games..it doesnt have a real Game Over screen sadly, the heroes are just on the ground and you are asked to load your game or exit to the main menu
Zombie Zone
Zombie Zone is the european name for Onechanbara on the Playstation 2. A low budget zombie slasher game, new parts of the series are much better than the first two.
The female protagonist dies after losing quite a lot blood the screen turns darker and the nice Game Over font appears…
